Trees Hate You Saving, Checkpoints & Continue

Demo checkpoints · Steam and browser

The short answer

The Steam demo should autosave at checkpoints. Progress made after your last checkpoint may be lost when you quit; full-game save transfer has not been announced.

Save at a checkpoint

The developer says the Steam demo should automatically save when you reach a checkpoint. You do not need to finish the whole demo in one sitting.

Quit before the next checkpoint and you can lose the unsaved part of the run. The developer’s example includes the time and deaths accumulated after the last checkpoint, so those numbers may also return to their saved checkpoint values.

Continue the browser demo

For an existing browser save:

  1. Open the demo in the same browser.
  2. Choose Continue.
  3. Select the save you were using.
  4. Resume from the saved checkpoint.

Continuing after a reload worked in the same browser session. This does not promise that a save will move between browsers or devices.

Steam Cloud

The developer says the Steam demo should use cloud saves. A report of lost progress can still involve synchronization timing; cloud support does not guarantee that every reported sync problem is fixed.

Does demo progress transfer to the full game?

A Demo-to-full-game transfer rule has not been announced. Checkpoint saves and Steam Cloud support do not, by themselves, mean the full game will import a demo save. Plan on that distinction when deciding how much time to put into a demo run.
